Make 2019 the year you learn to love yourself

So, what New Year’s resolutions did you make this January? Let me guess…

No wine until the weekend? Sign up for that 10k? Drop three dress sizes by July?

Whilst all these goals are admirable, I feel that they’re missing the point. Yes, cutting out alcohol and boosting your exercise will help you shape up, but will it also make you happy? Is squeezing into a size 10 really the Holy Grail? Or is true happiness an altogether deeper, more soulful achievement?

As a plus-size wedding dress specialist, we’re big advocates of learning to love yourself, whatever your shape. And this means digging deep, understanding who you are, accepting who you are, and ultimately loving who you are… warts and all.

This is why we go out of our way to make our brides feel beautiful, and that doesn’t mean pinching in their waists until they pass out – it means getting to know them and nurturing them from the moment they walk through the door to the moment they leave, dream dress and self-confidence in tow.

So, if your New Year’s resolutions are centred on diets and exercise, we’d like you to think about changing how you feel about yourself, rather than how you look. After all, a truly happy curvy bride is far more beautiful than a thin miserable bride!

If you’re new to learning to love yourself, then we’ve got a few pointers that will help get you started…

When you look in the mirror, rather than scrutinize your body, think to yourself: ‘I am a kind human being who is loved’.

When you get home from work and feel flustered, tired and stretched to your limits, be kind to yourself: run a hot bath, add your favourite aromatherapy oils, dim the lights, and let the water soothe you to your bones. (Ignore the shouts from the husband and kids)

When somebody says something that upsets you, or looks at you in a nasty way, breathe in, access your beautiful soul, and recognise that they are the ones who are truly ugly.

If you sense a negative thought coming into your head, such as ‘I’m too fat’, ‘I’m ugly’, or ‘I’m not good enough’, bat it away with an imaginary baseball bat and say ‘So long, fu$%ker!’ If you have to say it out loud, do so… you may look a bit mad, but it’ll be worth it!

At the end of every day, when you’re lying in bed and soon to fall asleep, think positive thoughts about yourself and your life. Avoid anything negative or worrisome. Just count your blessings, visualise a special box in your heart, and put them there.

And finally, when you’re getting glammed up to go out, whether it’s a girly night, dinner with your man, or even your own wedding day, hold your head up high, let your happiness show on your face, and, as Dolly Parton once said, ‘If you see somebody without a smile, give ’em yours!’

Because it’s your happiness, strength and individuality that truly makes you beautiful.
